Chicago energy deregulation
More than 20 years ago, the state passed the Illinois Electric Service Customer Choice and Rate Relief Law of 1997. This law eliminated the monopoly utility companies previously had on the electric industry and gave residents the opportunity to shop for electricity providers in Chicago and the rest of the state. About 75% of the state’s residents and businesses have taken advantage of this opportunity.
