Pittsburgh energy rates

Located on the Allegheny River, Pittsburgh is well-known for its history as an industrial powerhouse in the United States. The Steel City is also recognized for its contributions to American sports and culture, making it a fantastic place to live and visit.

Pittsburgh is part of Pennsylvania‘s deregulated energy market. As such, residents and business owners can pick their own electricity provider. This gives residents the freedom to shop around and compare plans to find cheap electricity rates in Pittsburgh.

There are a variety of plans and providers available. That means selecting the best electricity rates in Pittsburgh can get tricky. Choose Energy allows you to see which suppliers serve your area and which plans they offer. Through our easy-to-use energy marketplace, you can compare plans and sign up for one in just a few quick steps. There is no cost to use our marketplace.

Pittsburgh energy deregulation

Electricity deregulation in the Keystone State was introduced in 1996. At the end of that year, the Pennsylvania General Assembly passed House Bill 1509

This legislation gave electric customers the power to choose their own supplier rather than having to buy energy from a utility.

For consumers, deregulation offers more flexibility. It gives them the opportunity to choose an electricity plan that fits their needs. At the same time, deregulation sparks competition among suppliers. This benefits customers by creating more attractive energy rates.

These days, Pittsburgh residents and business owners have many providers to consider. Each one offers its own set of plans and rates. Electricity customers in Pittsburgh can now select from an array of electricity plans. Some of these plan types include fixed-rate plans, variable-rate plans, no-deposit plans, and prepaid plans.

But trying to understand the deregulated energy market can get complicated. That’s where Choose Energy comes in. We’re here to help you understand your energy options and make the right decision for your family. Check out some of the following Choose Energy how-to guides before you explore Pittsburgh electricity rates.

Pittsburgh utility companies & energy providers

Before 1996, utility companies played a massive role in the Pennsylvania energy landscape. They were responsible for delivering power to homes and businesses and still are today. But they also sold electricity straight to consumers.

Utility companies in Pennsylvania still sell electricity to people who don’t choose their own supplier. But nowadays, utility companies are more focused on delivering power to the community. As part of this, they maintain power infrastructure and fix outages in their service area. In Pittsburgh, your utility company is Duquesne Light Co. Its current supply rate for residential energy is 7.07 cents per kilowatt hour.

These days, electricity providers often are the companies that interface with customers. When you sign up for service with a Pittsburgh electric company, you will select one of their plans and make your bill payments to that company.

Providers determine their PA electric rates per kWh, which you will be able to compare to Duquesne Light’s before you sign up for a plan. Keep in mind, though, that a lower rate doesn’t always mean a lower bill. The Choose Energy energy buying guide covers this topic in more detail.

Some of the main Pittsburgh electricity suppliers include Clearview Energy, Constellation Energy, Frontier Utilities, and YEP Energy However, as mentioned above, people that don’t choose a supplier will need to buy electricity from the utility company (in this case, that’s Duquesne Light Co.).

Pittsburgh renewable energy

Despite the city’s history as an industrial and coal-reliant center, there are initiatives to make the Steel City more green. Recently, Pittsburgh’s mayor revealed a plan to move the region away from coal and natural gas and onto green energy sources.

Demand for renewable energy is also growing within the community. For example, local non-profit Sustainable Pittsburgh advocates for green energy and resource conservation.

If you live or own a business in Pittsburgh, you can opt for a renewable energy plan to reduce your carbon footprint. Electricity suppliers such as Verde Energy provide renewable energy options for Pittsburgh customers.
