About First Choice Power

First Choice Power is a retail electricity provider (REP) that has served residents and businesses across Texas for 70 years. In 2011, First Choice Power was acquired by Direct Energy, one of the largest retail providers of electricity and natural gas in North America.

Why choose First Choice Power

First Choice Power offers reliable service and a variety of plans to fit the needs of your home or business. The company also has a customer satisfaction guarantee with each plan.

First Choice Power plans

First Choice Power offers a variety of energy plans for residential customers. Below are some of the company’s most popular plans.

All First Choice Power plans have a $135 early termination fee, which must be paid if a contract is ended early. The fee will not be charged if a contract ends because the customer is moving.

You Got This 12

With this plan, you will pay a fixed rate for 12 months without worrying about seasonal changes or price spikes in the energy market. We recommend this plan for anyone that wants a simple, straightforward electric rate. The pricing is best suited for customers who use at least 1,000 kWh a month.

You Got This 24

This plan is similar to the You Got This 12. However, it comes with a 24-month contract instead of 12 months.

You Got This After Hours 12

This plan provides a fixed rate for 12 months and free electricity usage every night from 9pm – 6:59am for 12 months. Average price calculations are based on a 12 month period assuming 35% of consumption occurs during the designated free period. This percentage varies depending on actual usage, so customers should calculate a few different scenarios. There is also a $9.95 Base Charge and a $0.15 per kWh Energy Charge from 7am to 8:59pm.

First Choice Power review

Overall Score4.2/5
Customer Service2.5/5
Online Accessibility5/5
Business History5/5

We’ve broken down our scoring model into three main categories:

  • Customer service
  • Online accessibility
  • Business history

Using these criteria, Choose Energy assigns impartial reviews to top electricity providers in Texas. To learn more about electric provider reviews, see our full list here.

Customer service: 2.5/5

  • P2C complaint score: 0
  • Satisfaction guarantee: 5

The P2C complaint score in the customer service category comes from the Public Utility Commission of Texas’ most recent scorecard, which can be found here. Satisfaction guarantee was ranked on a yes or no basis. First Choice Power maintains a 2 on the P2C scorecard but offers a satisfaction guarantee, which improved the overall score for customer service.

Online accessibility: 5/5

  • Online bill pay: 5
  • Online chat: 5
  • Access to usage alerts & trends: 5

For each of these measures, providers were assessed on a yes or no basis. First Choice Power offers customers all of these options, earning the company a perfect score for online accessibility.

Business history: 5/5

  • Years in business: 5
  • Better Business Bureau accreditation:

First Choice Power has been in business for over 70 years, making it a veteran in the deregulated space and earning it 5 points. However, the company is not BBB-accredited. While companies must pay for a BBB accreditation, we believe it shows a desire for brand awareness and trust that we felt was important to include.

Types of rates offered by First Choice Power

First Choice Power offers multiple rate types, including both fixed-rate and variable-rate plans.

  • Fixed-rate plans: First Choice Power has a focus on fixed-rate plans, which ensure that your energy rate won’t go up or down during your contract. However, you’ll need to enter into a contract agreement with your power company (typically 12 months or more). These types of rates are best suited for people who want stability with their monthly electric bills.
  • Variable-rate plans: Unlike fixed-rate plans, variable-rate plans don’t require a contract, and they don’t allow you to lock in your energy rate. Instead, your rate fluctuates throughout your plan with the energy market. This type of plan is best for people who don’t mind the instability in their bill and want the opportunity to save money during certain months and leave their contract at any time.

Choose Energy's tips for electricity service set-up

Before signing up with First Choice Power (or any other provider), be sure to read the plan’s Electricity Facts Label (EFL). There, you’ll find details such as:

  • The price you’ll pay per kilowatt-hour used
  • How much renewable energy is included in your plan
  • The amount you’ll pay for canceling your contract early

Your new electricity bill will include charges from First Choice Power, as well as your local utility company, whose rates are determined by location and who is responsible for restoring power when there’s an outage.
