Understanding deregulation in Texas

The electricity market in Texas has been deregulated since 2002. Texans in many cities now have the power to choose their electric provider rather than simply buying from their local utility.

Deregulation doesn’t mean there is no oversight. The Public Utility Commission of Texas still regulates many aspects of what utility companies do. You can contact the Commission at 512-936-7000 to report any problems.

To learn more about how energy services work in a deregulated market, check out the following guides:

Difference between a utility company and energy provider

Oncor runs its business in deregulated areas where residents have the power to choose their energy provider. In deregulated markets, the energy provider is the company that generates and sells the electricity to consumers.

Texas utility companies such as Oncor Electric play a different role than providers. Consumers cannot choose their utility, which is predetermined based on location. Utility companies like Oncor are responsible for delivering electricity to the consumer. The utility is also in charge of maintaining electric infrastructure, so you would need to call Oncor (or your local utility) if you had a power outage.

Providers available in the Oncor Electric service area

Finding the right energy provider and securing lower rates is one of the best ways to save on your electric bill. There are plenty of options when it comes to looking for providers in the Oncor Electric Delivery service area. Trusted local providers include Gexa Energy, TXU Energy, 4Change Energy, Express Energy, Frontier Utilities, and more.

You can easily sort out these choices through the free, independent Choose Energy marketplace. With Choose Energy, you can find all-inclusive rates and various plan types. You can also view monthly bill estimates, reviews for each provider, and green energy plans powered by renewable sources like solar power. You can also filter by providers, plan types, and other options and learn about business energy plans in your area.

Electric rates tend to change by location, even within the broader Oncor Electric Delivery service area. This is largely due to different transmission charges involved in transmitting power to different areas. Enter your ZIP code to check the most accurate electricity rates in your area.
