Understanding deregulation in New Jersey

In February 1999, New Jersey passed a bill to deregulate the state’s electric and gas. This gave New Jersey residents the freedom to choose their electric and natural gas suppliers.

Energy deregulation allows customers to shop within their service area for the best rates and plans that match their needs. This includes purchasing energy from third-party independent suppliers instead of the default supplier.

To help choose, explore our extensive resources including the energy buying guide, how to switch energy providers, and no deposit electricity plans.  We also have you covered with tips to lower your electricity bill.

What is Public Service Electric & Gas’s price to compare?

The PSE&G Price to Compare (PTC) is the rate Public Service Electric & Gas charges to supply electricity or gas to your residence. For electric customers, the PTC depends on the exact kilowatt-hours (kWh) utilized each month. For gas customers, the PTC is based on the actual therms used monthly.

A third-party’s supplier price per kWh or therm may be lower than the PSEG price to compare. Easily compare rates and plans by entering your ZIP code above for a free listing of PSEG electric rates versus third-party suppliers.

What is the difference between a utility and a supplier?

A utility company is responsible for delivering electric or natural gas to your home. Utility companies own and maintain power lines, poles, and wires. Contact your utility company for utility emergencies including power outages or downed lines.

A supplier is an independent company who purchases energy from the utility company to sell to their customers. Customers in New Jersey must purchase their electricity from a supplier, not from the utility company. Due to deregulation, you are not locked into one supplier and can choose from the default supplier (such as PSE&G electric) or a third-party supplier.

Which suppliers are available in Public Service Electric & Gas’s Service area?

Third-party suppliers are abundant in the New Jersey PSE&G region under New Jersey’s Board of Public Utilities. Alternative PSE&G electric suppliers in the PSE&G service area include Constellation Energy and Direct Energy. Alternative gas suppliers include Frontier Utilities.
