Difference between a utility company and energy provider
It’s important to understand the differences between energy providers and utility companies in deregulated markets. Electricity providers (also called retail electric providers or REPs) generate the power and sell it to customers in the form of energy plans. You can use the Choose Energy marketplace to compare available energy plans offered by providers in your area.
On the other hand, utility companies (like Texas-New Mexico Power) facilitate the delivery of power between the REP and the customer. At the same time, utilities also maintain power infrastructure in their service area and respond to outages when necessary. If you’re a Texas-New Mexico Power customer and experiencing an outage, make sure to contact TNMP (and not your electricity provider).

Power outage safety tips
During a power outage, your safety should be your first priority. By preparing in advance, you’ll have the best chance of staying safe when you lose power. Here are some tips to help you get through your next power outage:
- Create an emergency kit. Take an hour to assemble an emergency kit for when the power goes out. Make sure it includes essentials like flashlights, water, nonperishable food, batteries, and a portable charger.
- Keep your appliances protected. Do a quick audit of your home and make sure that your appliances and electronics are plugged in using surge protectors. If you lose power, try to unplug all of these items (including TVs and laptops) before it comes back on.
- Avoid opening your refrigerator or freezer. Unless it’s an emergency, you shouldn’t open your refrigerator or freezer. If you do, the cold air will escape, and your food will spoil quickly.
- Contact your utility company. Get in touch with Texas-New Mexico Power to report the outage and get an estimate of when it will be restored.
